A workshop that has brought together the astrophysics and quantum optics communities to discuss new scientific and instrumental developments of Intensity Interferometry.

Context

Hanbury Brown & Twiss realized that when two neighboring detectors (telescopes) are pointed at a common star, their intensity signals display a mutual correlation which can be used to determine the stellar angular diameter. Intensity correlation measurements were subsequently used to measure the angular diameters of most of the brightest stars in the southern hemisphere. These experiments in turn triggered the development of quantum optics and have allowed studying photon statistics and non-classical states of light.

Several proposals have been recently put forth to revive astronomical Intensity Interferometry. In the meantime, cold atom experiments that perform intensity correlation studies have been developed. These techniques are expected to allow studying the nature of the emission of the recently discovered random laser with cold atoms and allow for new signatures to be explored in astrophysical lasers.

By stimulating collaboration between the astronomy and quantum optics communities, this conference will likely lead to scientific and instrumental developments in both fields.
